Am 20. März wurde Bono in Philadelphia die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität von Pennsylvania verliehen. Bono sprach vor Studienanfängern und wies in seiner Rede auf Armut und Hungersnot sowie die wachsende Aids-Krise in Afrika hin. Ferner rief er die Studierenden dazu auf, ihre gute Ausbildung dazu zu nutzen, ärmeren Menschen zu helfen.
