U2 News » Superbowl Halbzeitshow 2002 -"The exact right band at the exact right time

  • "Nobody does big like U2. They know how to deliver the grand gesture, but what makes them truly special -- especially in a live setting -- is their ability to match spectacle with intimacy" (Dan Hanzus, NFL)
  • "U2’s song choice for their set was beyond perfect" (Society of Rock)
  • "Apologies to Springsteen and Prince and, yes, Beyoncé—but as great as their halftime performances were, the stakes weren't nearly this high.
    (Scott Meslow, GQ Magazine)
  • "People like to rag on Bono for all his "heal the world stuff", but I don't know—he just brings such a genuine sincerity to the table. (...) U2 was the perfect band to openly address that in an uplifting, humanistic way." (Scott Meslow, GQ Magazine)
  • "MLK (...) it's like Bono and the Edge are singing a comforting lullaby to a whole country of people who've been having nightmares." (Ashley Fetters, GQ Entertainment)
  • At the end, Bono ripped open his jacket to reveal the American flag sewn inside. It was a pained tribute to America that still felt profoundly anti-war and anti-violence, quite a feat at the time. Only U2 could have made this so grandiose, yet so emotionally direct. Grown men wept buckets. Every daft ambition U2 ever had, every lofty claim they ever made, they earned tonight. (Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone)
  • There will likely never be a halftime show bigger than this one.(...) U2's show was a perfect mix of poignant remembrance and breathtaking musicianship. (Brian Welk/Jeremy Fuster, The Wrap)
  • Where the Streets Have No Name" ends with the lyric "It's all I can do"—but at the Super Bowl, Bono changed it to "It's all we can do." It's clearly intended as a statement from the whole band: "We're feeling your pain too, and we can't fix it, but we're one of the biggest bands on the world, and we'll put on the biggest, most heartfelt tribute we can." ((Scott Meslow, GQ Magazine)
  • I have one vivid memory of watching this halftime show as it happened: I remember watching Bono pull that American-flag-on-the-inside-of-the-jacket trick and thinking that was the most majestic shit I'd ever seen. I can't imagine not burying my face in my hands if I watched that happen on live television today; it's a different time, America's an angrier place, and I've grown up and become an adult who bristles at these kinds of po-faced public expressions of extreme empathy. But back then, whoo, boy.
    (Ashley Fetters, GQ Entertainment)
  • On Feb. 3, 2002, a single band created something lasting and important. U2 have been criticized often during their career for trying too hard to be important, but in this case they were the exact right band at the exact right time. (Dan Hanzus, NFL)
