Die erste Best-Of-Compilation von U2 ist auf CD und Vinyl erschienen. Außerdem wurde eine "limitierte" Doppel-CD veröffentlicht, die zusätzlich eine zweite CD mit den besten B-Sides von 1980-1990 enthält. Des weiteren wurde The Best Of 1980-1990 auch auf VHS veröffentlicht (siehe unsere Videographie).

U2 veröffentlichen an einem Tag ein 'Best of 1980-1990' Album und das Live Video 'Popmart Live From Mexico City', aufgenommen am 03. Dezember'97 in Mexico City. Die Erlöse der Neuaufnahme des 87'er B-Seiten Songs 'Sweetest Thing' gehen an das CHERNOBIL CHILDRENS PROJECT, deren Vorsitzende Ali Hewson ist. Das Album wird das "Schnellstverkaufte Album aller Zeiten in Irland" und Nr.1 in über 20 Ländern. Der bestehende Plattenvertrag mit Island wurde vorab "modifiziert" und umfaßt nun noch drei weitere Studioalben sowie eine weitere Best Of... Veröffentlichung.
