Fanletters to U2

"Paint the world you need to see..."
(Cedarwood Road)

Once musicians (or any other artist) present their art to the public, it may take on a whole different life from how it was initially written or intended. The audience might associate completely different experiences, emotions, events etc. with it, making it part of their own life story. Here on this page, we present an amazing collection of letters from fans to U2, describing exactly that: how U2 songs changed their lives, how close they feel to certain songs and why.

This project is a result of total coincidence: a few days before Bono turned 60 on 10 May 2020, one of our staffers had the idea to publish his personal fan letter to Bono, explaining, what the band meant to him and how it shaped his life. Little did we know when we decided to go through with that, that the same day, Bono would release a list of his 60 life-saving songs accompanied by fan letters to the artists, explaining why these songs are so important to him. Again, pure coincidence.

When we asked our fellow U2 fans on Twitter, what their life-saving or life-changing song from U2 was, the worldwide response was overwhelming and we received some great suggestions as well that we were happy to pick up and realise. We decided to collect as many (but at least 60) fan letters from U2 fans to the band, publish them on a webpage and, finally, at some point, print four copies with all fan letters trying to get them to Adam, Bono, Edge and Larry.

We are very thankful and humbled by the letters YOU ALL sent us via various channels and proud to present them here on this page, chronologically sorted by albums. Please enjoy the read, we are certain that you will find own experiences and feelings in some of them, that you will often-times be moved to tears or full of joy (or both) and that you will be inspired to revisit some of the songs after reading about them.

THANK YOU, fellow U2 fans worldwide and most of all, THANK YOU, U2! Thanks to you and your music and lyrics, many, many lives were influenced (in the best possible way!).

P S. Your letter is missing? Though we processed everything with utmost diligence, we might have overlooked something in one of the many channels. If so: sorry and please get in touch.

We have received 142 great letters from fellow U2 fans worldwide about 72 songs from 15 albums.
